ABIGAIL

I was exhausted. My entire body ached when I climbed into my car after finishing up at the shop. When Fanny walked in to take over, I’d nearly cried. I hadn’t realized how much help Shelby had been, and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do if she ever decided to leave.

It wasn’t like the town was crawling with people who wanted to work for me. In the past, doing it all myself had worked. But with the increase in foot traffic and having to take care of Samuel, I was feeling the pinch.

I kicked off my shoes as soon as I got into my apartment. Sabrina was in her room and Samuel was with her, which made me smile. I felt hopeful that things were getting better for her. I was seeing more initiation on her part, which helped lessen the stress I felt when I was gone. I was constantly trying to keep up with demand at the shop while worrying about what was going on back home.

If she could handle the home stress, it would be a load off of my shoulders.

“I’m back,” I called toward Sabrina’s door.

I heard something drop followed by an “umph” before Sabrina appeared in the doorway. “Hey,” she said. Her cheeks were flushed and her hair was pulled up into a messy bun. She was wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants, and looked more alive than I’d seen her look since Samuel’s birth.

“Hey,” I replied, giving her a wide smile. It felt good to see a glimmer of the old Sabrina. For the first time, it felt as if the sun were shining again. Maybe, just maybe, we were coming out of the storm. “How did it go here?”

Sabrina glanced behind her and then back to me. “Good. Samuel and I are going through my old clothes and getting rid of stuff that doesn’t fit.” She disappeared only to reappear with Samuel in her arms. She nuzzled his cheek and he stared up at her and smiled.

I missed my nephew, so I set my purse down and crossed the room. “I wanna see him,” I said as I took him from her arms and gave him my own snuggle.

Sabrina studied him for a moment before glancing over at me. “How was the shop?”

I sighed, not wanting to talk about it. I had to convince myself over and over again that I needed the shop and liked the shop. But when the tiny bookstore-slash-coffee shop was overrun by cranky, caffeine-deprived construction workers, it was the last place I wanted to be.

I yawned and made my way into the kitchen, looking for the chocolate I’d bought a few days ago. After setting Samuel down in his bouncer, I began to pull open the cupboards. “Something is going on. I’ve never seen this town so packed with people. I thought it was for those condos they are putting along the beach, but now I’m thinking there’s something more.” When I came up empty-handed, I glanced over at Sabrina.
